Roy Wilfrid “Chic” Johnston was born on June 18, 1923. We always celebrated his boosha (birthday) and Father’s Day together.
Someone asked what the one trait was that I admired about Dad. His humanitarian attitude comes to mind. He taught us not to hate anyone.
During World War II, Dad witnessed the devastating effects of hatred towards his fellow human beings. He raised us to think of ourselves as human beings first, and our race second. He used to say, “Your race or nationality is secondary. Think of yourselves as human beings first. That way, you are no different from anyone else on the planet.”
I found out when I was all growed up that Dad did not believe in God. His war experiences caused him to question how God could allow such horror. But you would never know that Dad was an atheist. He led a Christian life with Christian values.
(The next time we meet, I will ask Dad what life is like for an atheist in the Afterlife.)
Happy Father’s Day, Dad, and Early Boosha Greetings!
I was unsure what to get you, and Canada Post charges a lot to deliver to the Afterlife. And so I give you my gratitude — not only for today or your boosha, but at any time I remember what a good father you were and how you did your best. Thank you. I am forever grateful.
